Day 2 - S.africa - Johannesburg
Joburg, the city of gold...and the land of poor people...
Soweto Walking Tour
The following day was dedicated to exploring Soweto (Southwestern Townships), an area synonymous with South Africa's struggle against apartheid. We booked a walking tour with a local guide—a wonderful lady who resides in the Nozamo area, one of Soweto's shanty towns. She graciously invited us into her home, introduced us to neighbourhood children, and provided a deeply personal perspective on life in this underprivileged community.
Our tour continued through more well-known sites, including Nelson Mandela's House, various museums, and the iconic Orlando Towers. Each stop offered profound insights into the resilience and spirit of the people who fought against oppression and continue to shape South Africa's future.
A Unique Bus Station Experience
After our time in Soweto, we headed back to the city using public transportation. The bus station itself was an experience to remember—filled with numerous vans and minibuses emblazoned with signs indicating destinations all over Africa. The chaotic yet organized hustle of people and vehicles showcased the connectivity and movement that Johannesburg facilitates across the continent. It was a fascinating glimpse into the daily lives and journeys of countless individuals.
